Southern Indiana Eats N Treats Feature - October/November 2017: Huber's Preferred Meats

If you’re looking for a one-stop shop to get your fruits, vegetables, and meat for dinner tonight, instead of fighting the crowds at the chain stores, head over to Preferred Meats in Sellersburg. Conveniently located off of Exit 7 off of Interstate 65, they now offer an array of craft beers, domestic beers and even wine.

Opened in 2007 by Rodney and Kathy Hager, Preferred Meats had originally called Hometown Plaza in Sellersburg its home. The Hager’s owned Preferred Meats for ten years before deciding to retire.  Samantha and John Huber purchased the business in January of this year and have since made a few changes, not by changing the meat, but by adding more products.

“We’ve made a few changes as far as adding more fruits and vegetables, trying to make it more of a one-stop shop. We make it easier for people to come in and get dinner rather than having to stop here, get their meat and then go to the grocery store for everything else,” Samantha Huber said.

Samantha Huber is not only the owner and operator, but she also makes some of the Take ‘n’ Bake items in the store, these items are for easy dinners. You pick them up in store, take them home and bake them yourself. Perfect for nights when the kids have sports games or if you work late and don’t have time to stop by the grocery store on your way home. Preferred Meats intends to add more Take ‘n’ Bake items, so be sure to keep an eye out for those in the future.

At Preferred Meats, you can find just about any type of meat you are looking for whether it is beef, pork, poultry, fresh seafood or even various game meats. In the Game section, you can find elk, venison, local bison and even ostrich meats. Their beef products, such as steaks, filets, tenderloins and roasts, are popular items. At Preferred Meats, they do all of their own custom cutting and grinds in house. This means, when you purchase meat or grinds from Preferred Meats, you will not find any fillers or artificial ingredients.

Preferred Meats sells Boar’s Head deli meats, cheese and pickles as well. Boar’s Head meats and cheeses come with no antibiotics or preservatives, so you know you’re getting real meat and nothing artificial. They also offer JD Country Milk – a locally owned dairy that uses no hormones or antibiotics.

If you’re searching for beer or wine, be sure to check out the selection that Preferred Meats offers. You will find domestic beers, of course, but also an array of craft beers and a large selection of wine.

Call ahead ordering has always been an option, but as of mid-September, they are offering online ordering for your meats.  Soon they will have their full array of products available for pre order.  Save time shop online.

With the Holidays approaching, Preferred Meats will be taking orders for fresh, Amish turkeys starting at the beginning of October. Stop in or call to place your order to assure that you have the freshest turkey for your family this year.
