Reasons to Stay in Southern Indiana – July Edition

          It’s July, which means fireworks, swimming pools and hurrying to get in the last few summer memories before school starts back up. All of us, here, at MYSOIN want to help you make the most of your summer before it wraps up yet again. Here are some summertime events in the area that are sure to catch your eye!

            On July 3rd at 6pm, New Albany is having their Independence Day Celebration at the Riverfront Amphitheater! This event has free admission, local food, inflatables and a rock wall! The entire family is welcome to come on out! You can also watch a performance by the Louisville Crashers while you’re there! Who wouldn’t want to spend the evening celebrating in New Albany?

            Fire trucks, classic cars, music, food and fun? Sign us up! On July 4th there will be an Independence Day parade and ceremony in Downtown Jeffersonville. The parade route will be from Spring Street/Riverside Drive to Warder Park, where the ceremony and post parade celebration will take place!             Take a walk back in time to the 1900’s during this next event. Charlestown State Park is hosting a Guided Tour of the Historic Rose Island. Rose Island was a popular resort in the 1900’s and its remains are located in the heart of Charlestown State Park. This guided tour will be held on July 7th from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. For this tour, you will meet at the parking lot of trails 3 and 4. Gate fees will apply: $7 for Indiana residents and $9 for out-of-state residents.

            Also on July 7th, pack your blankets, lawn chairs and coolers and take the kiddos over to Gateway Park (500 Little League Boulevard) in Clarksville for a movie in the park. The movie this month is The Secret Life of Pets. Have you ever wondered what your pets do when you’re not home? If so, this is the movie for you! This event is free and the movie will begin at dark. Although this movie about pets, you are asked to please leave them at home. Smoking, and alcohol are also prohibited while in the park.

            Christmas in July is no longer just a saying! Buffalo Trace Park in Palmyra is making Christmas in July happen this year! From July 7th until July 9th, campers can join in on Christmas themed fun during the day and come for a bonfire with Christmas music and more in the evening. Activities are from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. each day.

            July seems to be the month for rewinds! On July 8th and July 9th, the Indiana Legion and the Corydon Battlefield Memorial Park Committee will be hosting the Battle of Corydon Reenactment at the Hayswood Nature Reserve (755 Hwy 135 NW) in Corydon. You will be able to watch a cavalry demonstration, an infantry speed loading competition and demonstration, and listen to various history discussions.             For all of our readers who enjoy drinking wine and shopping, this next one is for you! On July 14th, Downtown Jeffersonville (Jeff Main Street) will be hosting the Wine, Walk and Shop event from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Enjoy spending time with your favorite merchants of Downtown Jeffersonville and sip some wine as you make your rounds. Tickets are limited,  purchase in advance for only $15/each or $20 day of the event.  For more information, visit!

            On July 15th, Re/Max is hosting the Cruisin’ for Miracles Car and Truck Show at Big Four Park in Jeffersonville. If you would like to register a car or truck to be in the show, please contact Bill Burns at (502) 649 – 8744. It is $15 per entry. There will be awards for the CMN Hospital’s Riley Kid Choice, Top Fifty Cars, Mayors Choice, Brokers Choice and People’s Choice. There will also be a 50/50 drawing and door prizes! This event will be benefitting the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and will take place from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

            Hidden Hill Nursery (1011 Utica Charlestown Rd) in Jeffersonville is hosting their 7th annual, two-day Monarch Festival event to celebrate the migration of the monarch butterfly on July 15th and July 16th.  At this event, you will find art demonstrations, music, dancing, booths, and of course food and drinks. Activities will take place from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. on both days. Head on over and enjoy an art-filled weekend!

            It’s that time of year again – RiverPops is back at it! This year, they will be performing Disney’s Beauty and the Beast! Each performance will begin at 8:30 p.m. on the Jeffersonville Riverstage from July 28th through 30th. This is a free event and is open to folks of all ages! Experience the magic of the rose and watch the story unfold before your eyes like never before! What a way to wrap up the month!

            From celebrations and trips back in time to Christmas in July, Southern Indiana has something for everybody this July!
