Reasons to Stay in Southern Indiana – January Edition


            You’re probably thinking that it’s far too cold outside to get out and enjoy these events happening in Southern Indiana, but trust us, they will be worth your while! Once again, we are kicking off a brand-new month AND a brand-new year with fun events going on right here, in your own backyard! Start the year and the month off right by making memories with those you love!

            On January 7th at 2pm, kids and adults alike will be given the chance to Meet the Paleontologist, Alan Goldstein who is the park paleontologist at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville.  They will bring out fossils from the park collections storeroom and books to tell the story of snails and how they have changed since millions of years ago. This is an educational event appropriate for all ages and free with regular Interpretive Center admission. Enjoy a day talking to Alan Goldstein and exploring the center.

            Those who have put in the efforts to save the Nachand Fieldhouse have prevailed!  On January 9th from 1:30-2:30pm, the public is invited to the groundbreaking event that will mark the beginning of construction on the Fieldhouse. This project will help to make sure that it is here for today’s generations and future generations to enjoy! The work that will be done on the Fieldhouse will include an extensive exterior brick work, new exterior doors, windows on the southside, front entry porch, and a restroom update. Nachand Fieldhouse is located at 601 E Court Avenue in Jeffersonville.

            Also on January 9th at 6pm take time to unwind during a FREE New Year Meditation Workshop hosted by the City of New Albany Parks and Recreation. This is a 45-minute class that will give you a preview of the classes that are offered at Silver Street Park. Start the year off with a positive state of mind! Be sure to dress in comfortable clothes and to bring your favorite cuddly blanket and a pillow to help you relax! Silver Street Park is located at 2043 Silver Street in New Albany.

            On January 19th and 20th, Holy Family Theatre Group will be presenting the 34th Annual Variety Show – Timeless!  Take a walk down memory lane through some favorite Timeless songs, shows, and even commercials! Friday, January 19th is a family show, bring the kids and enjoy a fun night out! Saturday, January 20th is our 21-and-over night, beer will be available for donation. This is a FREE event, but good will donations will be accepted. Doors open at 6:45pm, show begins at 7:30pm. Holy Family Church is located at 129 West Daisy Lane in New Albany.

            Are you a fan of mystery? Do you get tired of beating all of your friends at the game of Clue? Do we have an event for you! On January 20th, The Old Capitol Tea Room in Corydon will be hosting a Murder Mystery event. Tickets are $30 per person and the price will include heavy appetizers and three teas paired with the three courses during the event and live performance.             On January 24that 7:30pm, The Ogle Center is hosting Richard Marx for a one-night special musical performance. Marx has sold more than 30 million albums across the world! He was also nominated for a Grammy for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. To this day, he is the only male artist in history to have his first seven singles reach the Top 5 on the Billboard charts. Head on over to the Ogle Center (4201 Grant Line Road) in New Albany for an evening of musical entertainment. Tickets are $45 per person. And can be ordered online at www.oglecenter.com/events/special-events/richard-marx.php. You may want to purchase them in advance to be sure that you have a seat in the audience.

            Get the whole family together for BINGO! On January 26th, the Clarksville Community Center will be offering a Family Bingo Night! Families can compete individually or as a group. All children ages 17 & under must be accompanied by an adult. During this event, families will have the chance to win a prize also! This event is FREE, but pre-registration is required.             If you made a New Year’s Resolution to get back in shape or if you’re just looking for an excuse to get out into the fresh air, we have an event for you! On January 27th, the Louisville Hiking Club will be hosting a hiking event at the O’Bannon Woods State Park in Corydon. The meeting spot for the hike is the first gravel lot on the right just after you turn off SR 62. The hike is 5-6 miles long and is easy to moderate. After the hike, the group will be headed to Cracker Barrel in Corydon for supper. The hike will be from 1:00pm to 8pm.

            January not only means the beginning of the year, but the beginning of the bridal show season as well! On January 13th at 1pm, the Pepin Mansion (1003 E Main Street) in New Albany will be hosting a Bridal Open House. This event will give brides a chance to connect with local caterers, cake and floral vendors that can help with their big day. If you have wanted to tour the mansion, this is the perfect chance to do so as well!

            On January 14th at 2pm, The Grand in New Albany is hosting their annual FREE Bridal Show and Tasting event. This show will feature some of Kentuckiana’s best bridal vendors on hand to assist brides with all their wedding and reception needs. This event will help brides get ideas for décor, cakes, catering, and much more!

            Whether you are planning to keep the kids busy this weekend or planning your own wedding, we hope these events can give you all that you need! We understand, it’s cold outside, but don’t let that freezing weather keep you from enjoying Southern Indiana. Bundle up and get out there! We promise you won’t regret it!
