Reasons to Stay in Southern Indiana – December Edition
With all of this up and down weather, we’re not sure if winter is ever going to make it to Southern Indiana. Even though the extreme cold temperatures haven’t reached us yet, we are bringing you some local events to get you into the holiday spirit. Whether you are looking forward to walking in a winter wonderland or getting some Christmas shopping done locally, we’ve got you covered! You definitely don’t want to miss these events going on, right here, in community!
To kick things off, you can attend the Holiday Bazaar on December 2nd from 9am to 1pm hosted by the Villages of Silvercrest in New Albany. There will be live music, a bake sale, a craft show and much more. You never know, you may find the perfect gift for that hard to buy for person! They will also be offering $5.00 boxed lunches. These boxed lunches will benefit Hope for the Holidays! Music, sweets, local crafts, we can’t think of a much better way to kick off the month of December!
For this next event, bring your own “little elves” out to the Community Center in Clarksville on December 2nd from 10am until noon for the Little Elves Workshop. They will have several activities for the kiddos to enjoy including cookie decorating, games, crafts and more! Help your little ones get into the Christmas spirit during this KIDS ONLY event!
Another event happening on December 2nd is at St. Joseph School in Coydon. They are hosting a Holiday Fair from 9am until 2pm. This is another great chance to buy something from local vendors for people on your shopping list. There will be items to take chances on while you are shopping, a painting class & Mrs. Claus Storytime! This is a free event, and you will have several chances to purchase gifts for others or even yourself!
Returning again this year is Jeffersonville Main Street’s Christmas Cookie Stroll! On December 2nd from 11am – 3pm, enjoy some homemade cookies with friends or family while exploring the shops in downtown Jeffersonville. Tickets are limited so make sure to visit www.jeffmainstreet.org to get yours today!
Looking to get your furbabies’ photo with “Santa” this year? Access Veterinary Care in Jeffersonville is offering an Open House and Holiday Photos with Dr. Santa on December 2nd from 11am to 2pm. There will be refreshments and fun, and best of all, the photos with Dr. Santa are complimentary! Bring your furbabies for a day of fun and a memory that you can hold on to forever!
On December 8th, at Historic Tunnel Mill in Charlestown, there will be a Christmas Candlelight Tour from 5:30pm until 8:30pm. This is a free event. We want to remind you to keep an eye out on the weather forecast just in case you need to bundle up. This event is appropriate for all ages! Tour the historic house after dark by candlelight and enjoy historical holiday decor, free cookies and hot beverages, as well as live period music. Take a trip back in time and discover the history of the Historic Tunnel Mill in Charlestown.
To all of our wine enthusiasts out there, this event is for you! On December 9th, Historic Downtown Corydon is hosting their annual Winter Wine Walk! Enjoy the sights and sounds of the holiday season, all while sampling wines from Indiana's finest wineries! General admission is $15 and begins at 3pm at the Blaine H. Wiseman Convention and Visitors' Center. The event will run until 7pm. Don’t let the cold scare you away, take this chance to visit some of the great shops and restaurants that Downtown Corydon has to offer!
On December 9th from 10am to 1pm, the Vintage Fire Museum in Jeffersonville will be hosting Snacks with Santa! Bring the family out for delicious snacks and photos with Santa himself! The photos will be taken on one of the many vintage fire trucks in the museum. If you haven’t had the chance to visit the Vintage Fire Museum, this is the perfect opportunity! The amount of history that the Museum has to offer is truly remarkable.
Christmas will be here before we know it, and it may be hard to find time to wrap up all of the Christmas shopping that you have to do. Southern Indiana offers several holiday craft and vendor shows to help with finding those last minute gifts. On December 9th, 300 Spring in Jeffersonville with be hosting a Holiday Craft and Gift Show from 9am until 2pm. Over 25 vendors showcasing their products and ready to serve you.
On December 10th from 2pm – 3pm, bring the kiddos out to make a natural ornament at the Interpretive Center at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville. $2 program fee. Children can choose from a wide selection of natural materials they will have available to make a holiday ornament, including shells, minerals, fossils, seeds, small pieces of driftwood and more.
If you’re looking for fun for the whole family, head on over to City of New Albany Parks and Recreation for the Holiday Bash & Snow Throw.The popular indoor snowball fight is back on December 16th! Games and activities begin at 3pm, Snow Throw begins at 4pm and the holiday movie (Arthur Christmas) begins at 5pm. There will also be holiday-themed crafts and games!
Once again, The Red Yeti is offering Selfies with Santa in Downtown Jeffersonville. Santa can be found in Glossbrenner Garden on Spring and Chestnut Streets. The dates for Selfies with Santa are December 8th& 9th, and December 15th& 16th. Bring the kiddos out and snap a couple of pictures with Santa!
Also going on throughout December is Charlestown’s Christmas City. If you have yet to experience this fantastic Christmas light display, this year is the year! Bring a big group out, start a new family tradition or enjoy a date night in this incredible winter wonderland! You can hitch a ride on the lit train that goes from the city square to the Family Activities Center. There are activities, including ice skating, for all ages. It is definitely worth it to experience this incredible display in our community!
